History Wars-EDED 4310

History Wars are whether to teach civics or take broader approach in this subject. Technology has so much information in any subject. History already has a load of information which is one of the problems. Teachers complain there is too much information to cover in a short period of time. Teachers are also concerned such information will cause less need of teacher. If the information is in their fingertips then why need a teacher? The problem with contradiction of textbooks is an issue as well. I personally feel history should include the basics but include cultural history from the area you teach in. Also I would hope teachers are creative enough to think about combining lessons. Teach writing but write about a history topic. If art is a subject covered learn and create a artifact from the past. We must combine lessons in order to cover things they don't have time to cover.

  1. I AGREE WITH YOU APRIL! THERE IS SO MUCH INFORMATION TO COVER AND HISTORY HAS VARIETY OF TOPICS TO COVER. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO COVER THEM ALL WHEN TEACHERS HAVES TO FOCUS EVERYTHING ON THE TEKS. HISTORY IS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE BARREL BECAUSE OF THE TASK. MATH, SCIENCE, READING AND WRITING ARE MORE IMPORTANT IS SCHOOLS, BECAUSE STUDENTS CANNOT ADVANCE TO THE NEXT LEVEL WITHOUT PASSING STANDARD TESTING. ALTHOUGH THEY DO TEST ON KNOWLEDGE OF MATERIAL THESE TEST ONLY COVER CERTAIN INFORMATION. CRITICS AGREE THAT HISTORY IS LACKING IN CLASSROOM. TEACHERS NEED TO INCORPORATE CULTURE EVEN IF IT MINIMAL BECAUSE IT HELPS TO UNDERSTAND OTHERS PERSONALITY

  2. I agree we as educators need to incorporate as many subjects together as possible. I really feel that we need to cover a lot more Social Studies to ensure that our youth grow to be empathetic to the past and prevent the same from happening in the future. With the use of the computer we have an open arena on every subject. With this resource teachers need to be aware of the many different views of events from our past. Unfortunately hate groups and conspiracy websites are easily accessed and students are subject to that information. This however helps teachers express the differences in opinions.
