EDED 4310

I look foward to learning great and new ideas. For all my fellow classmates I will try to keep all EDED discussions together. I'm learning as I go along so be patient; if it doesn't work I'll set up another blogger for my other classes.

  1. Week 3 Response

Where do I began? Esmeralda has a great idea to incorporate technology but there are some issues which raise concern. Esmeralda would like the students to be creative and she seems to trust them very much. When it comes down to it they are children and need constant supervision. Especially when they are encouraged to visit other websites then the ones listed.
The email is a major concern. Asking the children to provide school name, their name, age address, and their own personal email is not safe. This information allows predators to easily seek and find these children.
I personally would continue the assignment but provide continous supervision. I think I would provide a list of safe sites. Maybe we could still allow googling, just to encourage the use of search engines but in the end could only use sites listed given by me. I would not allow all the information posted on setting up the email. I feel I would put the children in danger. I think I would use my email and would allow children to contact experts through me only. I would read all emails and would print any responses to children. I might take a little longer but safe. I think also getting parents involved can be beneficial. Parents and children working together could create a stronger bond. If parents have an email address they can work with children contacting experts.

  2. April,

You brought up alot of great suggestions on how to monitor the students, I am not so sure that I would have continued on with the lesson plan. Having the parents get involved and doing it together is great for bonding but it still leaves her students open to predators. You know as well as I do that predators are extremely intelligent and just know the school is at times enough for a predator to find the child or even target another student.

  3. April,
I have total agree with you! What is Esmeralda think leaving the childern alone. I do believe that the teacher should try to get a teacher assistant or lab mananger to help her maintain order and make sure that the information does not get in the wrong hands. For example predators. Even though the media has caught several people there still continues to be out there. We as teachers need to always protect our student.
I also agree that having parent involved can help them advance their technology skills and bond with their childern at the same time. That is why it is important to send letter home with the childern to allow parents to participate in the event. I do believe that if everyone works together we can accomplish so much.

  4. April,

I totally agree on your view that we can't shelter our children from learning that's why I liked your suggestions on monitoring. Also, you are right about the need for our co-workers. We definitely don't have all the answers to being a great teacher but alot of heads is the way to go. You're right about how we will figure it out on where to post our responses. Thanks for the comments.

  5. I completely agree that the personal email and school name should not be included. On that same note I know that the school filter systems are strong but not perfect. Perhaps the she as the teacher could set up a friend school to blog with and only allow those students in that class to blog and not exchange emails. Perhaps there could be a group effort between the two classes.
